Turf Tavern

Restaurant | Oxford | England | United Kingdom

The "Turf Tavern" in Oxford, England, is a historic pub that is one of the city's most famous and oldest pubs. It is part of the British pub chain Greene King and is hidden away in the winding lanes of the Holywell area, surrounded by the prestigious buildings of the University of Oxford such as New College and Hertford College. Its origins date back to 1381 when it initially served as a malt house before becoming an inn in the 17th century. The listed building is a true piece of history, preserving the charm of past centuries with its low beamed ceiling and narrow passageways, transporting visitors to a world shaped by literary giants, politicians, and Hollywood stars.

The atmosphere at the Turf Tavern is unique, characterized by a labyrinthine layout with cozy rooms connected by narrow corridors and stairs. Particularly noteworthy are the three beer gardens that surround the pub on three sides, bordering on the medieval remains of the old city wall – a place where illicit activities like illegal gambling are said to have once flourished. Today, these courtyards provide a relaxed environment where guests can sit in good weather and enjoy the historical backdrop, while charcoal grills provide warmth and a welcoming atmosphere. The interior is equally charming, with a low ceiling that forces taller guests to duck, and a family-friendly, dog-friendly atmosphere that adds modern comfort with free Wi-Fi.

Culinary offerings at the Turf Tavern include classic British pub dishes with a focus on hearty and traditional cuisine. A highlight is the "Steak and Ale Pie," a hearty pie with tender beef stewed in a rich beer sauce and surrounded by a crispy pastry crust - a dish that warms the soul and pairs perfectly with a cool ale. The "Fish and Chips" is also a favorite: a large piece of fish, beer-battered and served with thick-cut fries and peas, presenting the British classic in its best form. For those seeking something lighter, the "Ploughman's Lunch" is a popular choice, a platter of regional cheese, pickles, and fresh bread promising rustic enjoyment. The dishes are freshly prepared and reflect the down-to-earth quality for which Greene King is known.

The drink menu is another highlight, with an impressive selection of real ales - up to eleven different types daily - sourced from local breweries capturing the taste of the region. The offering is complemented by a variety of gins, cocktails, and wines to quench guests' thirst and perfectly complement their meals. Local and seasonal ales are particularly popular, underscoring the pub's long brewing tradition and being appreciated by connoisseurs. The Turf Tavern is also known for its historical anecdotes, such as being a meeting place for personalities like Bill Clinton, who allegedly smoked marijuana here as a student, or as a filming location for the Harry Potter films, adding an additional cultural depth to the place.

The service at the Turf Tavern is friendly and efficient, with a team that embodies traditional pub hospitality and warmly welcomes guests. Thanks to the Greene King app, orders can be placed quickly and easily, making the process smoother on busy days. The pub attracts a mixed crowd - students, academics, tourists, and local families - and offers an atmosphere that breathes both history and community. It is a place that not only fills the stomach but also stimulates the imagination, whether through tales of Rosie's ghost who is said to wait for her lover here, or through the traces of famous visitors like C.S. Lewis and Elizabeth Taylor.

The Turf Tavern is more than just a restaurant - it is an experience that captures the essence of Oxford. With its historical significance, tasty dishes, and unique location, it remains a hidden gem inviting guests to become part of a centuries-old tradition. Whether for a cozy meal after a day in the city or a pint in one of England's oldest pubs - the Turf Tavern offers an unforgettable journey into the past that comes alive with each visit.

Nice cozy pub. May have to reserve in advance if you want a table inside. Mac and cheese was only cheese so it wasn’t great. Portions are fairly big

The food was very disapointing . Had the pie , it looked 10 times better thsn it was . Rock hard pastry , not a lot of filling .£17.00 . £13.50 for 2 pints . Although the waiter was very pleasant, the guy with the beard behind the bar was a bit grumpy
